Strengthen Your Relationships With Others By Better Understanding Yourself
Do You Need to Change The Way You Communicate With Your Donors?
Glenn Pittsford is a “driver” and “conscientious.” When he participated in Stelter’s Relationship Building Workshop® and took the American Management Association’s DISC survey that defines personality and work types, Glenn learned a lot about himself. And it has changed how he communicates with his donors.
“I’m just a believer,” he says of the workshop. “It is fascinating and helpful, and if you haven’t done it before, take the time to do it.”
The Power of Adaptation
Glenn, who is the assistant vice president for gift planning for the Texas A&M Foundation, was familiar with the DISC (Directing, Influencing, Supportive, Contemplative) survey but had never considered it within the context of planned giving. The Relationship Building Workshop®, which is facilitated by Carol Moreland, showed him how to adapt his personality to meet his donors’ needs so he could better answer their questions and provide the necessary information for them to make decisions about gifts.
Role-playing scenarios by participants were a large part of the process. “We each brought case studies of real donors and then we would be each other’s donors, practicing it on video,” Glenn explains. “So we learned how to ask probing questions, how to relate to people and make them feel comfortable.”
Being a “driver,” Glenn likes to move fast. But many donors want to take it slow, one step at a time. Now he is able to better serve those people. “Sometimes I don’t realize it, but I believe I am adapting to people,” he says. The workshop has helped him understand how he works and how to modify his actions. Glenn hopes to someday bring the Relationship Building Workshop® to College Station so the entire foundation staff—90 people—can benefit from it.
“It was a great experience,” Glenn says. And by learning a little more about himself, he now knows a lot more about how to help his donors.
